Breadseed Poppy- Garden Mix

Breadseed Poppy- Garden Mix

Papaver species

This garden mix is 10 years of collecting as many different varieties as I can find. It’s an assortment of double fills and singles, colors ranging from lavenders, pinks, Hungarian purple, salmon, black, and frilly peony sizes.

Bloom window comes on late June to early July in our Western WA zone 8a/b. Once a pod blooms it only lasts for a day or so. It’s enjoyed in the garden while the seed pod emerges and ripens.

Allowing the seed pod to remain in the garden for a month or longer allows for the pod to develop. You can tell that it’s ready to harvest when the top cracks open to each chamber. Or sometimes the top does not open and you can give it a little wiggle for the rattle test. If you can hear the seeds and the pod looks pale and slightly dry and spotted it’s most likely ready.

I prefer to scatter seeds wildly in the garden feb-march. You will be competing with birds who will see the seeds as food and slugs love new growth. I have worried in years past and have tried many different ways (cold stratification, sowing in fall vs spring, ice cube trays) but I’ve had the best success with a march direct heavy sowing.
