Hopi Black Dye Sunflower (Tceqa’ Qu’ Si)
Helianthus annuus
Dating back many generations this sunflower has been a source of both food and natural dye used in Hopi Basketry and for dyeing wool fiber.
This is a fun sunflower to grow as it holds a dramatic presence in the garden towering 7-12 feet and the size of the sunflower heads are exceptional. Sometimes twice as large as a human head. If given enough time to grow the larger heads will have time to fully ripen to reveal its full color potential.
The hulls hold the potent dye and seeds can be snacked in during the fall months.
